Thanks to the excellent " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! " posting from yesterday, a few local San Francisco Bay Area Oppo members chimed in that we should try getting a local group/chapter together.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I've created a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! to get things started, as recommended by Oppo members e2w226 and OffroadPizza. Please click the link and subscribe or reply to this thread if you'd like for me to add you to the group.

Kinja'd!!!

To the best of my knowledge, no such group exists at this point (or I'm just way too lame to have been invited to it and you've all done an excellent job of hiding it from me!) although it appears there are quite a few Opponauts in the area.

I have no specific thoughts on what direction this group goes in. Once we have a few members I can start an intro thread where we can all share whatever info about ourselves we feel comfortable sharing, and let the conversations and ideas flow from there.

Cheers and Happy Bay Oppoing!

Bay Area resident myself. We could also use WheelWell https://www.wheelwell.com/ if folks want to keep their emails out of it... My 'garage'

Haha - I was thinking of a FB group (still too ancient? does Tinder do groups?...oh wow, that might be a different kind of group!) - at least two Oppo members suggested Google Groups as the best option, so I went with it.

If there's a better platform more people feel comfortable with, I'll happily switch over!

im not in the bay area, Im just amazed Google hasn't axed it. The moderators use Google + but I realize that the odds of being an opponuat + bay area + google plus user are pretty slim.

Wait...Google Groups is different from Google + (which even in the bay area was an utter flop).

I think most people use the email functionality of Google Groups - you can just email the group address and it goes to all the users' emails - and responses are just all tracked through the same thread without showing all the recipients' addreses.

Honestly I'm only a member of one other Google Group, but that is of a bunch of young bay area professionals working at the usual big name tech companies out here and they all seem to be fully with the platform...so maybe Groups has a special following in the bay that's not common elsewhere?

Nice rides! I haven't tried out Wheel Wells yet but keep seeing it on Matt Farah's One Take videos, will have to try it out.

If there's a way to create local groups on there and you'd like to take the lead/tell people how to subscribe to it, sounds great to me!

Glad you've left the fog and shown yourself! :)

There seem to be a few other options being thrown around (like WheelWell) - perhaps this thread can turn into a brainstorming session for a bigger group to decide on the best platform to host things and get a list of people interested in joining.

Don't have a picture of my beater with the oppo sticker on it.

Live in the far East bay, work in the East bay.

Nice Viper! What's your beater?

I bought an Oppo sticker but never got around to posting it on my car.

I don't think you need G+ to join a google group - you should be able to do it with any email address, i think. It just basically acts like an email sender for any messages sent to/by other members of the group.

08 Honda Fit SPORT, I affectionately call my little piece of Fit. I go to the Blackhawk C&C fairly regularly. Haven't been to the CAFE SpA SF C&C yet, but plan on going soon.

Hmm I assumed Google groups was the same as Google+.

LOL, not really...but I have a few other google groups I'm part of and its pretty convenient. The conversations show up in your email (if you want) and communicating is as easy as just clicking reply.

At least to get started I think it's a good platform at a local level, outside of teh Oppo mothership on here, of course. Like I said - I have no particular motive or dedicated direction for this to go, so whatever people decide as a group is most convenient works for me.

Do you work at Cisco? My work is just a mile or two down from there as well.

Awesome, welcome!

Just accepted your Google Groups request too. Hopefully people stop being shy and start interacting a little - only way to make this work!

Hello, yes you can definitely have a group created. In fact there is an Oppositelock club already on Wheelwell ( https://www.wheelwell.com/club/54e53e0a4… ). We’d be stoked f you guys would like to have a local SF-based club in Wheelwell (we are based in the city too!).

Just shoot an email to clubs@wheewell.com, tell us who will be the admin and what the club should be named. We will get you set up lickety split.

Full disclosure, I’m one of the founders of Wheelwell.

Thanks!

Michael

Hi Michael, this is awesome! I’ll shoot an email and get the local club set up - Wheelwell seems like a more visual and interactive experience so it might help keep people engaged.

Thus far I’ve had about a dozen local SF area folks join the google group - so there is certainly a decent level of local interest.

Honestly I’ve been super busy and haven’t had much response from the rest of the local Oppos - have about a dozen people signed up but not much interaction. Perhaps a more visual interface like Wheelwell will help.

I’m switching jobs over the next few weeks (actually to an automotive-related company) and should have a bit more flexibility - will try to get the group moving again and reach out if I need any help. Thanks for checking in!

Hi Michael, just got a chance to send an email to request a club membership - hopefully I can work on getting people moved over to WW and get them communicating once that is done.

I also just started working at Jumpstart Automotive (part of Hearst Magazines - funny to see that Travis O is moving on from Jalopnik to the Hearst empire too) - lots of huge car fans here from the CEO down. I’m not on the sales side at all so not mentioning this out of any desire for some kind of personal benefits - happy to help with anything within the Jumpstart framework that might be of interest to WW, or any inside connections I can help with at Hearst (again I’m new so I don’t carry much weight - but happy to help any way I can!).
